Brothels are on the rise while the legal situation over them remains complex. A campaign has been launched by Crimestoppers in a bid to tackle the rise of so-called 'pop-up' brothels. According to the independent charity, more and more of the sex shops are on the rise while the legal situation over brothels remains complex. The campaign is targeting the issue of women being used as sex slaves in these kinds of premises, with many suffering abuse in the most inhumane conditions, reports the Nottingham Post.
According to Crimestoppers , these brothels are usually newly-acquired properties, often privately rented flats or houses, in towns and cities, which may only be used as a brothel for a short period of time. Budget hotels or holiday properties are also sometimes used.
Any premises - for example, private flats, saunas, massage parlours - may be classified as a brothel if they are used by more than one man or woman for the purpose of prostitution, whether on the same day or on different days. So, if you share premises with someone else and work on alternate days or weeks the premises will still count as a brothel, even though there is never more than one person working at any one time. Now, Crimestoppers is urging people to be on the look-out and report their suspicions if they spot signs of a pop-up brothel where they live.
Gemma Wilson of Crimestoppers, said: "These brothels are dens for criminals to recruit and house vulnerable women who are then put through ordeals no woman should have to go through. If you have any information on pop-up brothels call Crimestoppers anonymously on or through the anonymous online form at Crimestoppers-uk. By Rachel Sloper.
