Kenyan soapstone made in Kisii
Soapstone is very soft to carve, and has a very specific feel, soft and cold.
You will see some natural coloured products, but the carvers love to make their animals vibrant and bright, so staining the soapstone, and then decorating it.
Having done this, they then carve through the colours, so the natural whitish/pink colour comes through the designs as contrast.
Beautiful brightly coloured animals and birds, all created from the soft soapstone, found in the south west of Kenya, near Lake Victoria.
These carvings are all done by hand, and then individually decorated in bright colours, with a variety of patterns.
